Surface Laptop SE is a KILLER MACHINE!

Surface Laptop SE

There it is, isn’t it a beauty? I had the priviledge to test this machine for the last 2 weeks. They published it 8.12.2022 and you can already buy it if you want. But please finish reading this blog post before you buy, so you know how good it is.

First of all, the outfit: clean, smooth, simple. Perfect. I have used so many models of Surface and they always feel smooth.

How about the ports? They are also very clean and smooth.
1x USB-A
1x USB-C
3.5mm headphone jack
Barrel-type DC port
That is all you need for a student laptop.

Weight is only 2.45 lbs (1112.4g) and the dimensions are 11.17 x 7.6 x 0.70 inches

How about the battery life then?
Students will watch Netflix, YouTube etc… so the battery needs to be good.
Well on this little boy, the battery lasts for up to 16 hours. That is pretty impressive. I tested it myself and watched 8 hours of YouTube videos, and it still had approx. 30% of battery left after that. So If I was be a student, I would definitely choose this device.

What about the other specs then? Let’s see:

Operating System Windows 11 SE
This is a “student version” of the newest Windows, and the best part is that all the installings need to be done by Intune. We will get to this later.

Display 11.6 inches, 1366x768 resolution

When you have a small device, the display doesn’t need to be big. In student use, the resolution is not that big of a thing for me, unless you do some specific stuff. So in general the display is fine :)

Processor Intel Celeron N4120
Here is the link to some specific details about this processor. But in general this is same as display. It will do it’s job.

Graphics Intel UHD Graphics 600
Here is also the link to some specific details about this graphics “module.”

Can I run Minecraft with this graphic card? Yes you can. The Minecraft education game is pre-installed on this computer, so all you need is a Microsoft Education account, and you are good to go. What about the other games? You have to ask your it-support. ;)

Memory 8GB DDR4
Good enough for students.

Storage 128GB eMMC
Good enough, if you save all your files in to the cloud., where they belong :) I’ll also get to this later.
eMMC storage? Because it’s easy to remove and change.

Front Camera 720p HD
This resolution is clear enough to be in your Teams meetings. You don’t need 2K, 4K sensors when you are in meetings. You just have to remember to put the lights on when the meeting stars.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2x2), Bluetooth 5.0 LE
Here is different download speeds of the Wi-FI AC:s

2x2 AC = 867Mbps

1x1 AC = 433 Mbps

1x1 BGN = 150 Mbps

With Bluetooth 5.0, devices can use data transfer speeds of up to 2 Mbps, which is double what Bluetooth 4.2 supports.
Devices can also communicate over distances of up to 800 feet (or 240 meters), which is four times the 200 feet (or 60 meters) allowed by Bluetooth 4.2.

Dual Audio

Bluetooth 5.0 also enables a cool new feature that allows you to play audio on two connected devices at the same time. You could have two pairs of wireless headphones connected to your phone, and then stream audio to both of them at once, all via standard Bluetooth. Or you could play audio on two different speakers in different rooms. You could even stream two different audio sources to two different audio devices at the same time, so two people could be listening to two different pieces of music, but streaming from the same phone.

Overall, the specs are very good for students. Long battery life, enough storage and the newest operating system. All that you need for your student years.

What about the Windows 11 SE operating system

Windows 11 SE for education is built for teachers who need a simple, distraction-free environment for their students and for school IT admins who need devices that are secure, easy to deploy and manage, and perform well all day across the changing conditions of a school year. The cloud-first operating system is optimized to deliver great education experiences and catered to the unique needs of K-8 education.

So which apps work on Windows 11 SE devices?

Microsoft Office, Teams, Minecraft for Education and OneNote all come preloaded on Windows 11 SE.

Apps like Google Chrome etc. can be downloaded. Although, only administrators can download and manage other apps via Microsoft Intune for Education. Microsoft gave this list of the six types of apps that can be downloaded:

Content-filtering apps

Test-taking "solutions"

Accessibility apps

Effective classroom communication apps

Essential diagnostics, management, connectivity and supportability apps

Browsers

Earlier, I talked about cloud saving. When you save all your files into OneDrive, which is pre-installed into your device, and also pre-login, when you use your Microsoft365 account to login into your computer, you can easily access your files whenever and wherever you are. It’s so simple.
